School Overview & Development History
The MUC College of International Education was founded in 2001, and it is a young college that integrates teaching research and administration of international students. The college adheres to the concepts of “global vision” and “international development”. The college has more than 600 students studying all year round, including about 200 masters and doctoral students. The college is also responsible for the daily management of international students in MUC, and it enrolls nearly 1000 long-term and short-term international students every year, including nearly 300 students with some academic background.
The college's internationalization is distinctive, and the "bringing in" and "sending out" are both important. The college has become a well-known Chinese teaching institution at home and abroad. Famous Chinese teaching projects such as ACC and CIEE have been settled in the college. Two international students from the college have been awarded the title of top ten Chinese stars in Beijing. The papers written by two of the college's doctoral students have been awarded the title of "excellent paper" issued by the World Chinese Teaching Society. The international student debate team of CIE has won the second prize during the debate competition of international students in Beijing.
CIE is one of the two earliest colleges in China to set up the second level doctoral program of "International Chinese Language Teaching." The research on "international propagation of Chinese" set up under this major is at the forefront both in the domestic and foreign sphere and has achieved many leading academic achievements. More than 30 Chinese and international students have started studying doctoral degrees in this direction, 15 of which have already obtained doctoral degrees. They are now holding positions in well-known Chinese teaching institutions in both domestic and foreign universities. The other two directions - "international Chinese teachers, teaching materials, teaching methods research" and "Chinese Research for International Chinese Language Teaching" are also developing rapidly.
In 2007, the college enrolled undergraduate students majoring in the Chinese as a Foreign Language (renamed Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages in 2012). By 2018, 89 graduates from 17 countries including Thailand, the United States, Japan, Turkey, South Korea, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Central Asia were trained. About one-third of the students continue to study for Master's and PhD degrees at well-known domestic universities such as Peking University, Renmin University of China, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Minzu University of China, and East China Normal University.

At present, CIE has a complete educational leveling and a perfected discipline system which includes four levels of running a school, including doctoral students, master students, undergraduates, and Chinese language students." The college's "International Chinese Language Teaching" is listed as an independent second-level discipline at the university level for doctoral students, master of "International Education of Chinese," and undergraduate major "International Education of Chinese." CIE also offers non-degree coursework in Chinese language studies to meet the needs of overseas students learning Chinese.
In 2018, the college began to recruit undergraduate students for the International Education of Chinese major, adopting an export-oriented training model and is committed to cultivating Chinese teachers with international vision and comprehensive talents engaged in related work. In accordance with the school's broad-based training philosophy, the first and second years are based on general education courses and subject-based courses. In the third and fourth years, professional basic courses and professional direction courses are offered. The college provides many internship opportunities for students. Those with outstanding ability can enter some internships in well-known Chinese language teaching programs in Beijing, such as the Associated Colleges in China (ACC), the Columbia University Chinese Program (CIB), and the University of Mississippi Chinese Program. American Education International Exchange Association (CIEE), Princeton University Beijing Project (PIB), China Study Tour Program (CET), etc. At present, the college has jointly developed master's degree programs in International Education of Chinese with Brandeis University, West East University, University of Rhode Island, University of South Florida, University of Maryland, and Portland State University. Graduates are employed in the United States with a 100% employment rate, and the major counterpart employment rate is 97.73%.

Rich Scientific Research Projects
CIE has great scientific research achievements, distinctive characteristics of international Chinese teaching research, and the research on international propagation of Chinese is leading. In the past five years, CIE instructors have successfully applied for 1 major projects of National Social Science Fund, 6 General Projects of National Social Science Fund, 1 Humanities and Social Sciences Research Projects of the Ministry of Education, 2 Talent Support Plans under the New Century Talent Program of the Ministry of Education, 1 Humanities and Social Sciences Project of the Ministry of Education, and more than 10 scientific research projects of universities directly under the central government and Confucius Institute office projects. The total project funds amount to nearly 2 million yuan.
Cutting Edge Publications and Databases
The academic influence of CIE has rapidly improved. The number of cited scientific research achievements this year ranks amongst the top 10 of similar colleges in China. Research on International Propagation of Chinese Language, edited and published by CIE, is the most professional academic journal encompassing research on international communication of Chinese at home and abroad. The largest academic resource platform in China, CNKI, includes all publications from this journal.
The series "International Propagation of Chinese and Research on International Chinese Teaching" is planned and compiled by the college and has published more than 30 original academic monographs, which have great influence in the field of international Chinese teaching. In view of the actual situation and an urgent need for teaching materials encompassing training for international Chinese teaching amongst postgraduate students, the college also organized the preparation and publication of the series of postgraduate textbooks regarding international Chinese teaching.
CIE has a college-level research center focused on "language teaching, cognition, and acquisition" Sponsoring a specialty journal, "Research on the International Communication of Chinese Language" (included in CNKI), which publishes the research results of the theory and practice of Chinese international communication. It has also built the first "International Chinese Language Teaching Database" in China, which has established a good research resource platform for teachers and students of the college and some off-campus colleagues. Among them, the "International Chinese Teaching Academic Paper Library," the "Masters and Doctoral Thesis Database," the "International Chinese teaching materials database," the "Confucius Institute Database," the "International Chinese Teaching Case Database," the "Courseware Library of Chinese Culture International Propagation," the "Foreign Master of Chinese Education Academic Paper Corpus," and the "International Chinese Teaching Academic Report Library" have all been providing strong support for teaching research of instructors and students of the college.

CIE attaches great importance to discipline construction, and the rapid progress made has been highly recognized by peer institutions. The college has established a teaching research and management team with young and middle-aged scholars at its foundation. There are 28 full-time teachers, including 3 professors, 11 associate professors, 14 lecturers, and 22 of whom hold doctoral degrees (accounting for 79% of the total number of teachers). The college has one candidate for the New Century Talent Support Program of the Ministry of education. Furthermore, the CIE also hired 4 part-time master's tutors outside the college, and more than 10 well-known scholars from both home and abroad have served as visiting professors. The college has introduced several teachers with training from international universities such as the University of Hawaii, Cambridge University, York University, Carnegie Mellon University and Lancaster University.
Academic Exchanges and Cooperation at Home and Abroad
The MUC College of International Education has been one of the most active schools in MUC in terms of international exchange. For the most part this has involved the bringing of students of Chinese language and culture to Beijing for long-term studies from about 100 different countries. Many scholars from MUC College of International Education have participated in a variety of activities outside of China as well.
The master of Chinese International Education offered by the college enjoys a high reputation and recognition in the field of Chinese language teaching at home and abroad, especially in the United States. The original "1+2+x" outward-oriented joint training model for China and foreign countries is maturing by the day. It provides high-quality education for students to seek life development in English-speaking countries such as the United States. The Chinese students studying in this major are highly extroverted. The number of students studying abroad, doing internships, and taking on jobs accounts for more than 50% of the total number of students, and this proportion is still increasing. The college has masters and doctoral students doing work in nearly 20 countries, including the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Bulgaria, Hungary, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and more.

Chinese Language Education Major
Dr. Liying Zeng has been engaged in Teaching Chinese for foreigners in the MUC College of International Education for since 2008. Her courses include Comprehensive Chinese, Chinese Listening, Chinese Reading, Chinese Writing and Chinese academic Writing for Foreigners. She has rich experience instructing foreign students from North American as well as Asian countries and so on.
She has more than ten years of extensive and in-depth research experience in the field of linguistics, focusing on a variety of methods related to teaching Chinese as a foreign language, vocabulary, syntax, and computational linguistics. She taught in the Chinese Language Department of Three Gorges University between 1992 to 1997 giving lectures on modern Chinese and an introduction to linguistics. She studied in the Chinese Department of Peking University in 2002-2006, and became a postdoctoral fellow engaging a research project related to computational linguistics at Peking University between 2006-2008. She focuses on research pertaining to the thesaurus of the "Modern Chinese Grammar Information Dictionary". Since 2008, she has worked in the College of International Education of Minzu University of China. In 2012, she was appointed as a professor and doctoral tutor.
Dr. Zeng has published about thirty papers as well as a book on linguistics which focused on theoretical linguistics which specifically investigates western grammatical theory and discourse analysis. Dr. Zeng has also published an English paper regarding Chinese semi-affixes in the “International Journal of Knowledge and Language Processing”. Apart from this, she has also published a book regarding teaching of Chinese language vocabulary to CSL (Chinese as a Second Language) learners.
In terms of international activity, Dr. Zeng has been a visiting scholar during 2014 and 2015 at the University of California in Los Angeles, California. In addition to these activities, she has offered some presentations about linguistics at several international academic conferences held in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Japan as well as Thailand.
